Mellay Gardner Receives 20009 Harbison Award
The 2009 recipient of the Harbison Scholarship is Mellay Gardner of Salem, Ohio. She grew from a struggling nonreader to become a class valedictorian. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was three years old, she received high-dose chemotherapy from that time until age six. This treatment resulted in traumatic brain injury, which manifests itself in deficits in attention, processing speed, visualmotor skills, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and fine-motor coordination.

Muneera Fontaine Receives 2009 Cary Award
The thirteenth recipient of this scholarship is Muneera Fontaine of Ft. Worth, Texas. She is pursuing her doctoral degree from the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders. Muneera was the little girl who always played teacher in her room with her dolls and stuffed animals. She stated, “I would set up a play chalkboard and line my dolls up in rows and instruct them on their ABC’s.”

Alyssa Foster Receives Endowed Scholarship
A June graduate of Mid-Prairie High School, Alyssa Foster of Riverside, Iowa, is the recipient of a $1,000 award from the P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship.

Society Amends Bylaws for Directors, Officers
As a part of its continuing effort to control costs and streamline the management of the Society, the Board of Directors has adopted an amended set of bylaws revising the make-up of the board and extending terms of certain officers. The changes take effect in November after the Society’s 2009 annual meeting of members in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Society Office Changes Several Procedures
Over the past few years, the Society has received numerous comments from members that they would like to receive their members-only print and membership brooch faster. So we re-evaluated the fulfillment processes for the prints and brooches, and we’ve made some changes to make this happen.

Society Cookbook - "Recipes for Touching Lives"
The P. Buckley Moss Society is preparing a unique cookbook featuring favorite recipes from members and friends nationwide. Our hardbound cookbook will contain beautiful Moss images in full color and is sure to become a collector's item. We have chosen "Recipes for Touching Lives" as the title for our cookbook. It will be more than just food recipes; it will also include anecdotes about how the Society, Pat, and Pat’s art have touched the lives of others. This content is what will make it unique, meant to be read, and different from all the other cookbooks out there.

Annual Board Report for 2009
As of October 31, 2009, donations of art and cash made by the Society during 2009 exceeded $45,629. This amount includes 316 fundraising events supported by donations from the Charity Print Collection valued at $33,040; the 213 events completed in 2009 that have reported their results have raised over $84,177. The amount also includes $7,000 in scholarship aid and $4,933 for the Moss Foundation’s Teachers Grants. In the Society’s 22 years, $447,803 has been given in scholarships, awards, grants, and donations, the Charity Print Collection has helped raise over $3,122,013 for charities, and Society chapters have raised over $1,614,302 for charities.
