Today's difficult economic times were evident in the increased numbers of applicants for the Cary and the Harbison scholarships. Congratulations to Muneera Fontaine and Mellay Gardner respectively.
Muneera of Ft. Worth, Texas, obtained her B.A. degree from the University of Maryland and her M.A. degree from George Washington University. She is currently working toward her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders, focusing on Infant Mental Health and Developmental Disorders. She taught for several years at Prince Georges County Infants and Toddlers Program. Her goal is to influence those who shape and form educational policy, especially to take the families of young children into account when policies are being drafted.
Mellay of Salem, Ohio, will attend Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and major in political science. Her eventual goal is to do humanitarian work in the area of human rights concerns. In addition to maintaining an outstanding GPA, she has served as a class officer and president of multiple school clubs. As an athlete, she has received several awards for playing tennis. Her most enjoyable activities have been those which involve service projects. She was a reading tutor, she created and implemented a summer reading camp, earning her Girl Scout Bronze Award as a result, and she and her mother created a family reading program which they conducted for the past three years in two area school districts.
